As many of you already know, it isn’t just Disney’s theme parks, hotels, cruise ships and film industries that are taking a big hit with this current situation. Dinsey also has a large presence on Broadway with three musicals including The Lion King, Aladdin, and Frozen, as well as a large number of touring stage show productions.
And while all Broadway performances gave their final curtain call on March 12th, the temporary closure was only set to remain in effect until April 12th. Now, the reopening of Broadway has just been pushed back.
Over the last few weeks, New York has become our country’s biggest hot zone and as a result, Governor Andrew Cuomo has issued a state-wide stay at home order which will be in effect until April 29th.
The Broadway League has recently announced that all productions will now stay on hold until June 7th. The announcement is so new that we aren’t seeing this information reflected on all show ticket websites yet, but will most likely be updated soon.
Meanwhile, New York’s other venues including The Met, Carnegie Hall, and the New York Philharmonic have also extended their closures. “It would be irresponsible to continue having performances when clearly what is being called for is social distancing,” Peter Gelb, the general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, told the New York Times.
If you wish to help actors through this difficult time, please consider making a donation to Broadway Cares. They’ve set up an Emergency Assistance Program to help actors covering the cost of housing and food while they’re unable to perform.
And on April 13th, Broadway Cares will be live-streaming a Disney on Broadway production at 7 PM Eastern to raise money for actors! We will continue to keep you updated on this situation.
